El monasterio de San Francisco

Click on an image below to see it in its original size.

The order of St. Francis of Assisi was founded in Italy in 1208 and arrived in Perú with the troops of Francisco Pizarro.  The original church was built in 1542 but destroyed by an earthquake in 1656.  The present day monastery was built from 1668 until 1727.  Located below the church are catacombs which used to be the main cemetery in Lima.
